Nominees for 85th Academy Awards: Spielberg’s Lincoln is the Leader

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

And they’re off – the 2013 Oscar derby is underway with the nominees list being relased! The nominees for the 85th Academy Awards are led by early fave Lincoln with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor and Steven Spielberg for Best Director. In a big of a surprise, the visually stunning Life of Pi had the second most nominations with 11.

There were 9 films that made the cut for Best Picture this year, getting the required 5%+ of first place votes. They include Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables, Django Unchained, Amour, Silver Linings Playbook and Argo. Ben Affleck, star and director of Argo, was snubbed by the Oscars though as he did not receive a nomination in either category. Also getting snubbed was The Dark Knight Rises, receiving no nominations, not even in technical categories.

The 12 nominations for Lincoln matched Spielberg’s personal best on Schindler’s List, which won seven Oscars that year. Other top nominated films include Beasts of the Southern Wild
, Les Miserables and The Master. Fave actors receiving nominations include Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence.

Seth MacFarlane is set to host the Oscars this year, airing on February 24th. Expect his alter-ego Ted the bear to also make an appearance.

Super 8 Twitter Sneak Preview Event

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Excited to see JJ Abrams’ Super 8? Don’t want to wait until the film officially opens on Friday, June 10th? Then get active on Twitter!

Paramount Pictures and Twitter have announced a unique partnership that will bring the sci-fi adventure to select theaters on Thursday, one day before the film’s June 10 wide release on 3,200 screens. Over 300 theaters — including 240 IMAX screens in the USA and Canada — will take part in what’s being called the “Tweet Movie Sneak Preview” program. Visit the Super 8 website for more details.

Set in 1979 and containing trademark Abrams’ super-secrecy, the movie is on pace to gross between $25 million and $30 million according to some early estimates. A somewhat low figure considering for a major film by Abrams, and being produced by Steven Spielberg. This may be the reason for the Twitter sneak preview event, with Paramount hoping people who see it on Thursday will tweet positive word of mouth for the opening weekend.
