And they’re off – the 2013 Oscar derby is underway with the nominees list being relased! The nominees for the 85th Academy Awards are led by early fave Lincoln with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor and Steven Spielberg for Best Director. In a big of a surprise, the visually stunning Life of Pi had the second most nominations with 11.
There were 9 films that made the cut for Best Picture this year, getting the required 5%+ of first place votes. They include Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables, Django Unchained, Amour, Silver Linings Playbook and Argo. Ben Affleck, star and director of Argo, was snubbed by the Oscars though as he did not receive a nomination in either category. Also getting snubbed was The Dark Knight Rises, receiving no nominations, not even in technical categories.

Although Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games series is only 3 books in total, the film adaptations will be split into 4 different movies. Lionsgate Studios confirmed this news earlier in the week, but they did not specify whether one book will be split into 2 films, or if the entire trilogy will instead be stretched out over 4 films. Catching Fire and Mockingjay are the 2dn and 3rd books in the series.
The Hunger Games has been making lots of headlines lately as final casting spots have been announced. Current Hollywood ‘IT’ girl Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen, while other actors include Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Donald Sutherland. Lionsgate has only committed to the first film so far but with the massive success of the books, it is expected that all 4 films will be produced. The first film is now in production, and is penciled in for a March 23, 2012 release date.
Time for a Hunger Games update! We now officially have an actress who will play the lead role of Katniss Everdeen: recent Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence has landed the plum role.
The big screen adaptations of Suzanne Collins hit book series is expected to become a hugely popular film series, starting with the scheduled 2012 release of The Hunger Games. Social media and internet chatter had been active on the topic of who plays Katniss for many months but the guessing game is over. Jennifer Lawrence is hardly a household name (now anyway!) but she was nominated for an Oscar for her work in 2010s’ Winter’s Bone. No other Hunger Games casting news yet, but the film will be directed by Gary Ross.
