A Festivus For the Rest of Us!

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Happy Festivus All! December 23rd is Festivus, of course made famous in popular culture by the television show Seinfeld.

So how did Festivus come to be? It is a non-secular holiday invented by writer Dan O’Keefe, who’s son Daniel (a writer on Seinfeld), incorporated into an episode that originally aired on December 18, 1997. On the show, George Costanza’s father makes the family celebrate it each year, much to the chagrin of George. Thanks to multiple airings of that episode in syndicated repeats since then, Festivus has become a term known the world around and yes, there are people who celebrate it each year. Some of the most memorable customs of the holiday include the Airing of Grievances, the Feats of Strength and of course, the aluminum pole. Whether you’re celebrating “a Festivus for the rest of us or not”, season’s greetings from MovieGoods!
