A Detailed Look at the Academy Award Favorites

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

The 2010 Oscar campaigns are officially underway. The Academy mailed out the 2010 ballots earlier this week, which are due back from voters by January 14th. That leaves a 3 week period of subtle campaigning by the studios, including mailing out copies to the films to voters.

Once the nominations are announced, a second, less subtle round of studio marketing begins to push a nominated film to Oscar winner status. So which films are currently the favorites to get nominated in the major categoriesÉ Dave Karber of EW.com provides a weekly, updated list of the movies and actors that he expects to be nominated, and eventually win the Academy Awards.

According to Karger, The King`s Speech, The Social Network, The Fighter, Inception nd Toy Story 3 remain the Best Picture favorites. His list of most likely actor nominees includes Colin Firth, James Franco, Jamie Eisenberg, Natalie Portman, Jeff Bridges, Annette Bening, Christian Bale and Nicole Kidman.

Is The Social Network the Oscar Favorite?

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Is The Social Network the Academy Awards favorite? Other than The King’s Speech, no other film is receiving as much love on year end ‘Best of 2010′ lists, as well as multiple nominations and awards from critics and various film associations. Based on the book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’, the film tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg and how he started Facebook, and turned it into the social and economic force it is today.

The Social Network has received love from The Golden Globes, The National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle, L.A. Film Critics Association, Screen Actors Guild, Roger Ebert, Entertainment Weekly and just about every other relevant film critic in America. With momentum like that, coupled with a very nice box office return of over $90 million, The Social Network seems like a lock to get multiple Oscar nominations this year, including Best Picture. At this point, it’s likely just a question of how many Oscar nominations the film gets.
