Eddie Murphy to Host Next Academy Awards

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

It’s official: Eddie Murphy will be the next host of the Academy Awards. Oscars producer Brett Ratner is trying to bring more comedy to the telecast, so cue Eddie! Ratner released a statement saying “Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever. With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances — especially on stage — I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don and I want to produce in February.”

Yes, the star of such infamous Hollywood ‘classics’ The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Norbit, The Nutty Professor, Meet Dave and Dr. Dolittle, will now have the pressure of delivering a memorable funny Oscars telecast in 2012. We welcome this seemingly off-beat hosting choice – time to shake up the much too long, too slow and too boring Academy Awards telecasts.

Academy Changes Oscars’ Best Picture Category Again

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

For the second time in 2 years, changes are afoot for the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards. Back in 2009, the governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded the Best Picture category to include 10 films instead of the traditional 5 nominees, which had been the case for many decades. The move was made in an effort to increase interest and TV ratings by having more popular films nominated. Last year, it resulted in some top films such as Toy Story 3, 127 Hours and Inception being nominated. Would those films have made the cut at the old limit of 5? Maybe, maybe not.

But now we’ve got some new changes again. Starting with the 2012 Oscars, there can be anywhere between 5 and 10 films nominated for Best Picture. The new rules will require a film to garner at least 5 percent of first-place votes to be nominated for best picture. The exact number of eligible Best Picture nominees won’t be revealed until the full nominations list is revealed in January. The Academy has also announced some changes in some other categories, including Best Animated Movie: click here to view more details on all the Oscar Awards changes.

Natalie Portman Black Swan Controversy Emerging

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

After her recent Oscar triumph, taking home the Best Actress Academy Award, these should be great times for Natalie Portman. However, there has been some recent controversy amid accusations that the bulk of the dancing in Portman’s Oscar-winning role was actually performed by her dancing double, American Ballet Theatre soloist Sarah Lane. If true, does this diminish her work in Black Swan?

Black Swan choreographer Benjamin Millepied and film director Darren Aronofsky have stated that Portman did 80% of the dancing in the movie, but Lane recently claimed she performed over 95% of Portman’s full body dance moves. Black Swan co-star Mila Kunis has come forward and defended Portman but so far, Portman herself has not commented publicly. Perhaps her thought process is to remain quiet and let the story fade away.

Was Christopher Nolan Snubbed by the Academy?

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Based on the amount of traffic on the topic on Twitter and other social network sites, a lot of the general public thinks that director Christopher Nolan has been snubbed by the Academy. Nolan did not get an Oscar nomination for Inception, despite the film being nominated for Best Picture. Although there are many exceptions, it is a common occurence for the directors of Best Picture nominated films to also come along with Best Director nominations. Of course, with there now being 10 films nominated for Best Film and still only 5 Director nominations, that is no longer the case.

Perhaps what rubs salt in the wounds of Nolan is he also did not get either a Director or Best Picture nomination back in 2009 for The Dark Knight, a film most people considered to be amongst the best projects of that year. At least Nolan has much support from the public: an online poll this week had him named as the runaway leader for Most Obvious Oscar snub, way ahead of Tangled not getting a Best Animated Picture nomination.

A Detailed Look at the Academy Award Favorites

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

The 2010 Oscar campaigns are officially underway. The Academy mailed out the 2010 ballots earlier this week, which are due back from voters by January 14th. That leaves a 3 week period of subtle campaigning by the studios, including mailing out copies to the films to voters.

Once the nominations are announced, a second, less subtle round of studio marketing begins to push a nominated film to Oscar winner status. So which films are currently the favorites to get nominated in the major categoriesÉ Dave Karber of EW.com provides a weekly, updated list of the movies and actors that he expects to be nominated, and eventually win the Academy Awards.

According to Karger, The King`s Speech, The Social Network, The Fighter, Inception nd Toy Story 3 remain the Best Picture favorites. His list of most likely actor nominees includes Colin Firth, James Franco, Jamie Eisenberg, Natalie Portman, Jeff Bridges, Annette Bening, Christian Bale and Nicole Kidman.
