The Strange Story of Senna Becoming a Cult Hit

Every now and then, a movie comes out of nowhere and becomes a cult hit, and the posters become big selling items. That happened in 2010 and 2011 with Senna, a sports documentary about the life of late Formula 1 racecar driver Ayrton Senna. How did Senna make it movie screens? That’s a big of a strange journey.
In 2004, director James Gay-Rees stumbles upon an article marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Ayrton Senna – who some believe was the greatest motor-racing driver of all time. The article triggers James to recall his father telling him the tale of when he once met Senna and how he was different than all other drivers. This eventually leads the director to make a film about the last 3 days in the life of Ayrton Senna, who was so tragically killed at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. At a pitch meeting with Universal in 2008, James shows actual race footage he has on his laptop and the movie gets greenlighted based on that. The movie finally gets released in 2010 and throughout 2011, it gathers buzz for the stunning race footage and also gains very strong film critic support. There you go – the making of a cult classic!

HBO’s popular series True Blood is returning for Season 5 this summer. No official premiere date has been announced yet (its likely to debut in June though) but the buzz is building, in part because HBO has released some new teaser trailers.
One of the big storyline questions to be addresses in Season 5 is whether Tara is dead or not. From the teasers, we can also see that it’s evident that the recurring themes of sex and violence will remain ever-present in the series. And vampire lawlessness may be running rampant even more in this season than in previous ones. Check out the trailers below to get yourself pumped up for a new season of True Blood!

The Bodyguard Getting a 20th Anniversary Re-Release

It seems like it might be an opportunistic reason to capitalize on the recent death of Whitney Houston, but the studio says it will re-release The Bodyguard this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film’s original release back in 1992.
During its original theatrical run, The Bodyguard grossed over $410 million worldwide and further increased the star power of Whitney Houston, who played a singer menaced by a dangerous stalker. Slowly she falls in love with the man she hires to protect her, a former Secret Service agent played by Kevin Costner.
This special Bodyguard re-release is very limited, showing in just more than 400 select theaters on March 28th for a one-night-only anniversary screening. Also, the 20th anniversary edition Blu-Ray will hit stores that same week.

21 Jump Street Movie Preview
Prior to 2012, 21 Jump Street was best known as a little TV show that featured some unknown kid named Johnny Depp, airing back in the late 1980s in the early days of the FOX Network.
Now the fondly remembered but somewhat obscure TV series is getting a reboot as a Hollywood movie release.
Opening in theatres on March 16th, the 21 Jump Street movie stars recent Oscar nominee Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as a pair of police officers sent undercover as high school students trying to take down a drug ring. Although there will certainly be lots of action and crime, the movie is being played primarily as a comedy. The comedy is targeted at adults, who likely remember the original TV series, as the film is R rated.
