2011 on Broadway: A Year in Review

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

2011 was a solid year for Broadway productions in New York, as several shows made headlines throughout the year and ticket sales had an uptick. Without a doubt, Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark made the most headlines, and arguably, made more news than any Broadway production in many years. Despite the bad publicity, the show is a big grosser taking in over $1.5 million per week. Spider-Man also set a new single week Broadway record over the Christmas holiday period. Other top Broadway events in 2011 included The Book of Mormon, penned by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The Book of Mormon was the big winner at the 2011 Tony Awards.

Other top Broadway tickets in 2011 included the long-running musicals Chicago and Les Miserables, Wicked and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which starred Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe for much of the year.
